Gates Automotive Complaint - Diagnosis Charge before repair

Review by jmzee on 2007-12-21
ROCHESTER, NEW YORK -- I made a mistake of taking my car to Gates instead of my regular shop. I thought it was pretty obvious problem with leaking fluid from the clutch hydraulic system.

They always charge for even looking at your car. In this case they charged me $80 for popping the plastic cover off the clutch. I know you think that that is outrageous but in addition they listed every part in the clutch system and price to replace it. The result was an absolutely outrageous repair estimate.

Gates is the tow supplier for AAA. They said they charge for a diagnosis so it is my own fault for agreeing.

My regular shop did the repair for less. Of course they did not replace any of the good parts.

I spoke with Ralph at Gates Auto about the unnecessarily high estimate and he said that he had given me the worst-case estimate and he said they would not have replaced parts if they were OK. However after the expensive diagnosis fee I was not going to trust their judgment.

Agreed, Yes a diagnostic fee is fair and that price isn't that crazy, but the estimate clearly was padded and in error of root cause. Having been able to have another mechanic fix the problem without all the parts change out is evidence, and I doubt also Gates would have came back substantially less after the fact.

Diagnosis is not free. You go to the doctor and say its only a little headache, give me a pill. Doctor says no you need a diagnosis. Runs some tests and tells you that little headache is a brain tumor.Performs surgery and saves your life. Would you still complain about the bill for the diagnosis?
