The UPS Store Complaint - Denial of claim for lamp that was broken in shipping.
MURRELLS INLET, SOUTH CAROLINA -- On November 23, 2007 I went to the UPS store in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina to mail a wall lamp to my niece in Florida. The lamp was made of plaster & there was a glass globe. The box the lamp was in was closed so the contents were available for the clerk, Allie, to see. I asked her if we should put it in another box - she replied "no". I asked if we needed to put more of the "peanuts" in the box to protect the lamp, she replied "no". There was another employee in the store at the time - Cathy. The lamp was marked "fragile". In shipping the globe was broken & some of the plaster part of the lamp was chipped. I had also asked Allie for insurance on the package because the lamp cost $248. When she quoted the price for shipping I asked if the insurance was included - she replied "yes". My claim was denied because they said I had packaged it myself.
When I went to the store in Murrells Inlet to pick up the box I tried to talk to Cathy about what happened - a man was behind the counter & he said I was not telling the truth that I had been offered another box but didn't do it because I didn't want to spend the money. Allie went up to the man & said in very quiet tone that she needed her job. Apparently she & Cathy had given this man their version of what happened. The man behind the counter refused to help me take the large heavy package to the car. I've believe that UPS should check on his operation.
I will never ship UPS again, even if I have to pay twice as much! I wish someone would do something about a company that does business in this manner.
Thank you for letting me vent & I hope you share it with the main office of UPS.
