Rubinstein Dentistry Office Complaint - Poor Dentistry Office

Review by Kitty301 on 2008-01-08
MONTGOMERY VILLAGE, MARYLAND -- I scheduled an appointment and was sent to see a third dentist not shown on their webpage. I went in late summer '07. He told me I needed a few fillings, two crowns, and possibly to have two old crowns redone.

I had the small fillings done, and had an appointment scheduled for a crown, when I got a letter from my insurance company okaying the 6 crowns he had submitted for.

I called the office, but the doctor wouldn't talk to me personally. I asked the office manager about the 6 crowns, she relayed that the doctor said all 6 were necessary, but had no answer about why he hadn't told me about them.
When I said I couldn't afford the co-pay on six crowns, and asked if the dr could do some as fillings, she called me back to say that the doctor said they were too bad to be filled, but that I could have some done in 2007, some in 2008 and some in 2009. (FYI: I wasn't in any pain from any of my teeth whatsoever.)

I was suspicious that the dentist would say that my teeth were so bad as to need crowns, but that they could wait 1 1/2 to 2 years before being attended to. Again, the doctor would not talk to me on the phone. I asked the office manager if I could see one of the Drs Rubinstein, instead of Dr Siemon, but she refused, saying that once a patient sees one doctor, they have to stay with that doctor.

I was too worried to go back, and tried to wait the 6 months 'till my ins would pay another dentist to check my teeth, but upon having pain in a tooth, I went to a new dentist. This tooth needs a crown, I knew it would. He called the ins. co. while I was in the chair, and brought me the out-off-pocket amount. I showed him the paperwork I'd gotten from the ins. co., citing higher out-of-pocket amounts. The new dentist asked his staff, and they responded that Rubinstein's office had used a more expensive billing code upon requesting the 6 crowns, which padded the bill on exactly the same procedure.

I would not recommend this office to anyone.

This dentist and office seem seriously shady. I am glad that you went elsewhere. I can tell you as a professional, if you requested to see another doctor, that request should have been granted. I would report that to the state dental board. The doctor not wanting to speak with you is also a concern and needs to be addressed appropriately. As a patient I can tell you that if I am not comfortable with my doctor or his recommendations for my or my families care, I will go elsewhere. You did the right thing by not going back.
