Better Made Potato Chips Compliment - I think they're not only 'Better Made,' they're better tasting...
TROY, MICHIGAN -- For the best tasting potato chips/snack food (IMHO), you can't beat the items produced by a company on the far east side of Detroit, Better Made. They started in business in 1930. They're a family owned and operated business which hasn't been swallowed up by some larger companies as a couple of our other icons. (Stroh's beer, Vernor's ginger ale. I think Stroh's ice cream is still made here.)
They produce many flavors of potato chips, Cheddar cheese popcorn (both yellow and white), pretzels, etc. They also produce some far out flavored chips: Curry & Garlic, Ketchup. At Christmas time, they pack tins of chocolate covered potato chips.
My favorites are plan, Barbecue, and Sour Cream & Onion. To me, the sweet barbecue are too sweet, and don't get me started on the hot barbecue. Eat the latter only when accompanied by a bottle of water--or maybe beer.
They have a pretty cool website. It surprised me to see all the items manufactured in what is a somewhat small building I've passed hundreds of times.
Their products are usually a few cents cheaper than a national brand, and I suppose that may be because of lower transportation costs. My understanding is they are sold only in Michigan, with the possible exception of Toledo OH. However, on the website you can order their products.
I've been eating their chips since I was a kid. Never had the opportunity to take the plant tour they have for schools. The 10 years I lived outside Michigan, whenever I came in to visit I always loaded up on those delicious potato chips. In my book, Better Made is tops in chips and popcorn. And I just slit the top of a new bag of chips.
