Howdy Honda Complaint - Buying an Auto from Howdy Honda

Review by blackonred on 2008-02-17
AUSTIN, TX 78745, TEXAS -- My husband and I bought a Used Isuzu 2004 Rodeo Sport from Howdy in June of 2007.

My husband and I were having financial problems from some health issues that go back a ways and just could not keep up with our last four payments on our 2002 BMW325i.

This was extremely discouraging due to the fact that we only had 4 payments to go and owed $3,000.

So, we had been through literal hell from other issues and so I had to go and trade in the BMW. I went to Howdy Honda on Ben White here in Austin Texas at their certified car dealership and spoke with a salesman John Gonzales (Speedy Gonzales). He came out right away when he saw that BMW and was all over me about what he could do for me. I told him I had to get rid of my "baby".

Immediately without any questions asked he takes me to a very nice Accord. I am thinking to myself. "why would someone bring in a BMW for an ACCORD buddy? Don't you even have a clue?

Well he tells me lets go for a spin. So we do. Then I tell him, I need to get a car trade in for the BMW and would like even trade.

Well that changed right then and there. I was firm on what I wanted and I said $16,500.00 for the BMW. It was a sport edition, black, fully loaded, gray leather, sport edition, sport seats, german tint, 17" wheels, 22,000 miles on it, 2002?, great shape, mats had never been used, new CD, brakes new, new $264.00 battery, the works....

They were moving that day to a new location so they had some cars marked down so they said. So, he goes and talks to the manager comes back and agrees on the price, sits down and starts telling me about all of these crap cars he has. I told him let me go outside and see what you have.

So, I go outside and look and see a few cars. One of them is nice..it is a 2004 Rodeo and very clean, nice, is loaded, nice wheels, price 13,364,00 upgraded to a sport edition, 40,000 miles. It has a warranty with it.

So I ask about it and he detours me. He tries to sell me everything else that is crap. I tell him what about the Rodeo? He says well the difference is too much..I asked how much? He says $650.00. It is for $12,999.00. So he wants me to take a 2008 Kia!!!

So I play the game take it home and come back and tell him no. It is the Rodeo or forget it.

We had a Rodeo in the 90's and I knew that Honda made them and believed it to be a good car and it had a warranty on it so thought how could we go wrong. Asked to drive it for the weekend to see. So I did. It drove great and was like new. Especially since it only had 40,000 miles on it.

On Monday, we go in sign the papers and that was that.

Well,a few days later, I noticed that it seemed to feel like it had a flat tire, but it did not. I told my husband but he had not driven it so he did not know but my girlfriend had and she did notice it. So, the next day it seemed as though the car was leaning to the left from the back.

So, I take it to Honda, and show the Manager and he says bring it out tomorrow and we will put it up on racks and take a look.

The next day I was sick so I called and went out about a week later. The manager was not there but another one was and he did not put it up but wanted to drive it. So he did and said he did not feel anything nor did he hear anything. Well I insisted that there was something wrong with it but he would not listen nor put it up.

So, I left frustrated. About a couple of days later it's raining heavy, and it feels terribly unstable. I called the salesman and tell him. He says well "you are just used to the BMW".

I got angry and said no it is not "because I am used to the BMW!" there is something wrong with this car and it feels unstable and loose in the steering. I do not feel safe! He replies "well take it to Isuzu".

I am furious. The next day I called Honda spoke with the manager and he tells me to bring it out again and he will look at it. So I did and goes up to the car, pulls up and down on it, looks under it, and says nothing is wrong.

I asked "could it be maybe the spare coming loose and rubbing the tire? it seems like it might be lower and the car appears to be leaning to the left?". He replies "No, it seems fine to me". "I do not know what you are talking about".

Again, I leave frustrated and angry.

So, I get home and tell my husband all of this and he is to ill to go out there to Honda. I went out to the car and got the manual and the paperwork.

Well I am going through the paperwork, and see where the previous owner had the oil changed and thought well I'll call him and see if he can tell me a little about the car. So, I do.

He freaks out!! He starts asking me "Who are you? How did you get my number? Who is the salesman that sold you the car?" So he calls Honda the next morning at 7:00 a.m. sharp and tells them to call me and have them tell me to never call him again and he was angry that they left any paperwork of his in there?

So Honda does that and calls me and tells me that the customer would like me not to call him again. WHAT? Is that not weird??? I would not act like that if someone called about that BMW..
What did he have to hide? Is something wrong with this car? Now I am thinking Oh My God! What is wrong with this car?!

In fact, I gave Honda every single bit of information about our BMW and all the extra information about it. I even happened to meet the girl when I took the Rodeo out there! She was buying it that day. Well did they tell her what she was getting? No...I did. I explained everything in that car to her. She was afraid she said that she got a "lemon". Why? Because of the low mileage and the "AS IS".

Well I told her "NO WAY!" This is a great car and explained why we sold it, showed her all the amenities, told her about the german tint that cost $400.00, the new CD player, the brake job of $1500.00, the $264.00 battery, new mats, iT WAS A STRAIGHT SIX SO A LITTLE FASTER, and she told me? "Thank you for taking such good care of it?" But...........

underneath the very front of the car was some damage from a car wash that tore up the from of it because it was a sport edition and too low to the ground.

I was angry at Exxon for that one but we had been through so much I never went through the motions of getting it fixed but did have it appraised and it was $1500.00.

It was torn and someone sure pulled that area off...and she never noticed and had already signed papers...DID HONDA DISCLOSE THAT? I DO NOT THINK SO....I DID THOUGH....SHE ALSO PAID $19,500. Plus one of the emblems was gone off of the tires and it was not when I took it in and those are $20.00 a piece!! I told them I had some at home and to tell her and I would give them to her, that is $40.00 !!!

i EVEN OFFERED TO GIVE HER SOME CD'S THAT CAME WITH IT THAT WERE CALLED THE ULTIMATE EXPERIENCE THAT WERE GREAT!! IT WAS LIKE YOUR DRIVING THE CAR ON YOUR PC!! SHE GOT THE BEST!! WHAT DID WE GET?? THE LEMON!!!!

Now, I continue to look and see our paperwork we signed and wait a minute, it's not signed!! This is their paperwork!! And we got screwed out of $275.00, I do not remember him saying an amount like that in cents and dollars at all! We would have picked up on that. It was for $16,500.00 so it was their adjustment on their paperwork but they did not believe us and it was not signed!!!!

This paperwork belongs to Howdy Honda!! Behind it is a certified check list of their body shop who does all of their mechanical work on their cars, and it is not signed off either! The only signed paper work we have is an odometer reading.

Then I find in the car, mechanical work done on the car of back brakes done, caliper pins, hydralic fluids and flush, and pads but they never gave us that at all. Then they did give us a carfax report on the car but it states at 28,000 miles!!! not at 40,000!!!

Then the sticker on the windshield is supposed to state who to call for complaints and did not...

They were supposed to issue temporary red stickers for licenses and did not. We have never bought a used car except once and we financed it so we had no idea about tags because they were the previous owner license plates and we thought they came with the car when signed over and we did not go and get tags for 45 days!!! We kinda snapped later on...Honda was responsible for issusing temporaring tags!

Then we find out that that car had a recall back in 2005 for a fuel injection leak!! They did not tell us that either...I find out that car came from LaFayette Indiana. Indiana if infamous for terrible rains and runoffs of sewage! There was a terrible rain there in 2005!! Could that car have been in a flood?

I called an Isuzu in Houston and asked and they said that under the seats the metal would have a hazy look, well it did and the doors all looked brand spanking new...so I take it to a mechanic and he says no way but that he cannot take off the fuel cover and really tell because it would be impossible to know for sure on that but he does not think so because it would smell terrible?

He did not see any lines anywhere? The seats had a pinkish tint to them? His response that soemone probably wiped them down with those red rags which made sense and I thought well I am just being paranoid and the guy was not there in 2005 or I couldn't prove that anyway....

So, I let it all go and the mechanic says the fuel injector system that he had seen on the other Rodeos was different. So, I tell him to check the car out completly and if they find out anything let me know. So they charge us $100.00 or a little more and say it is good to go.

Now, in December, the car brakes start squealing.
I take it in thinking it needs front pads. The same place. We had replaced the warranty now with a new one. They call us and tell us that the back brakes are disinegrated??? Have holes in them? Shocks totally gone?

I call Honda and tell them this and that they say they did the brakes. Now the place that was fixing them? They tell me, the only way those brakes could look like they did (the car only had 1400 miles on it after purchase from then) is to have driven with the emergency brake full force!

Now I am nice to Honda and say "maybe they made a mistake and put the old ones on by mistake". At this point I am not aware of the shocks. They say we will call you back.

An hour goes by and they call me back and what do they say??? YOU PROBABLY HAVE BEEN DRIVING THAT CAR WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ON!?"

I could not believe it!!

So, we had it fixed, it cost $1,000.00. Then to find out? It needed STRUT RE-ASSEMBLY, ALL FOUR SHOCKS TOTALLY WORN, BACK BRAKES, PADS, AND HYDRAULIC FLUSH......JUST WHAT HONDA SAID THEY DID IN JUNE 1400 MILES AGO.....

THAT IS UNSAFE DRIVING AND THAT IS WHY THAT CAR FELT UNSAFE ON THE ROAD AND THEY DID NOTHING?

THEY PUT MY LIFE IN DANGER!!! THEY HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT THOSE STRUTS OR SHOCKS!!

THEY WERE RUDE, WE HAVE THEIR PAPERWORK, THEY DID NOT BELIEVE US, NO TAGS GIVEN, A RECALL?, CARFAX REPORT AT 28,000 MILES INSTEAD OF 40,000, A WARRANTY THAT DID NOT TRANSFER AS THEY SAID IT DID, STICKER THAT HAD NO PHONE TO CALL FOR COMPLANTS, DID NOT FIX WHEN HAD 4 TIMES TO DO SO WITHIN 30 DAYS, ALL OF THAT BRAKEWORK PAPERWORK STATED DONE AND IT WAS NOT AND WE HAVE IT? AND THERE IS NOT WAY THOSE BRAKES COULD LOOK LIKE THAT AFTER 1400 MILES AND WE HAVE THOSE BRAKES.

WHAT ABOUT THE SHOP WHO LOOKED AT THE CAR THE FIRST TIME WE TOOK IT IN FOR A CHECK IN THE FIRST PLACE? THEY SHOULD HAVE SEEN THAT? SO, WE WOULD HAVE HAD SOME KIND OF RECOURSE TO GO TO HONDA AND SAY WITHIN THAT 30 DAYS WE DO NOT WANT THE DAMN CAR!!!

SURELY WHEN YOU ARE PAID TO CHECK A CAR OUT FOR MECHANICAL PROBLEMS SO YOU KNOW IF YOU GOT A GOOD CAR OR NOT THAT IS WHAT YOU GET PAID FOR AND THEY DID NOT???

SO, THEY DID NOT SEE SHOCKS WORN, STRUTS? BRAKES?AND THE SECOND TIME? THEY DID???

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE STORIES???

CAN I DO SOMETHING??

DMV TOOK THE COMPLAINT...BUT THEY SAY THEY WILL ONLY FINE THEM NOT TAKE AN ATTORNEY CASE. WE HAVE NO MONEY TO FIGHT...IS THIS FARE???

ANYONE KNOW SOMEONE WHO WILL HELP US???

SURELY HONDA SHOULD GO DOWN FOR THAT AND THE ATTORNEY COULD WIN THIS ONE AND TAKE IT ON CONTINGENCY COULD'T HE?

I AM WILLING TO GIVE UP THE MONEY FOR THE PRINCIPAL, ALL I WANT IS BACK MY $1,000. THEY CAN HAVE THE REST. JUST GIVE THEM THE EXPOSURE THAT THEY NEED. THAT IS ALL I WANT AND JUSTICE.

PLEASE SOMEONE FIND AN ATTORNEY FOR ME!!!!!!!

THEN THE WHOLE TIME I DROVE OVER 60 IT SHOOK TERRIBLE. ISUZU DEALERSHIP TOLD ME IT WAS FINE TOO!! THEN THEY SAID OH I THINK YOU WHEEL IS RUBBING THE TIRE.

SO, I GO BACK TO HONDA HE (THE MANAGER, PAUL)AGREES TO PAY FOR A NEW TIRE AT A DISCOUNT!

TELLS ME TO GO THE DISCOUNT TIRES ON BEN WHITE. I GO TO DISCOUNT TIRES? HE CALLS HONDA AND PAUL THE MANAGER? REFUSES ON THE PHONE AND ALL WITHIN 30 DAYS ! THE GUY AT DISCOUNT TIRES? DOES IT FOR FREE AND THE TIRES ARE FINE, THEY ROTATED THEM..........SOMEONE PLEASE CALL US !!!!

I sure would delete your phone number off of this post.

It's not good to post your actual phone number on a public site. I strongly suggest you remove that and your last name from this review.

Good post, but take the name and phone number off....BTW, KIA's are decent cars but that is hindsite I guess.

I was going to offer my advice but I cannot help consumers who "read" into everything and assume way too much. And by the way, some people simply do not want to be contacted when they trade their vehicle--not because "something is wrong with the car." Our policy is OUR dealership will contact the previous owner first, to make sure if the prospective buyer may contact them. It's called being courteous. I am not doubting that you have had some problems with this vehicle, but I really suspect that having to give up a car that you really hated to give up is a lot of the problem--not the Isuzu.
