Westland Hallmark Meat Company Informative - Largest Beef Recall in US History

Review by 20131 on 2008-02-18
From the New York Times website

A California meat company on Sunday issued the largest beef recall in history, 143 million pounds, some of which was used in school lunch programs, Department of Agriculture officials announced.

The recall by the Westland/Hallmark Meat Company, based in Chino, Calif., comes after a widening animal-abuse scandal that started after the Humane Society of the United States distributed an undercover video on Jan. 30 that showed workers kicking sick cows and using forklifts to force them to walk.

The video raised questions about the safety of the meat, because cows that cannot walk, called downer cows, pose an added risk of diseases including mad cow disease. The federal government has banned downer cows from the food supply.

I highly recommend you check your own freezer to make sure you don't have anything produced by this company - and discard it or return it to your retailer if you do. - pwp

The video of guys with forklifts dragging these "downer cows" to their execution was pretty horrific. A buddy of mine said to me, "but cows are delicious, they can't drag 'em through the slaughterhouse fast enough for me!"

I just can't get over the fact that not only did they use "downer" cows, but they sent most of this meat to schools! The treatment of the animals was absolutely horrible. I love a good steak as much as the next guy, but at least treat the animals humanely.
