USPS Complaint - Avoid the USPS! :-(
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON -- The USPS handling of packages leaves a LOT to be desired. Oddly enough, when I insure a package (say for higher value items) it makes it there with no damage.
The past couple of times I shipped items of moderate value without insurance (it seemed to me that the insurance isn't really worth it unless it is an expensive item -- BAD ASSUMPTION) they have arrived in tiny bits.
I spoke with my letter carrier about this trend that I've noticed and he acknowledged that uninsured packages get thrown or dropped a lot more often than insured ones do. Ugh! I then wrote a letter to the USPS concerning the situation with appropriate proof of purchase and mailing and got a form-letter response essentially telling me "tough luck". They didn't offer to compensate me for the damage or even refund the postage!
Naturally, small claims Court could be a venue to resolve issues like this but as a pseudo Government agency they can apparently only be sued in Federal Court. This takes considerable time and money as there are no small claims procedures there. Needless to say, this effectively leaves the average consumer without recourse.
Lesson learned: avoid the USPS! They don't care if they lose or damage something and there is no effective way to seek a remedy when they do!
