Rental Car Companies Informative - Unpaid Tolls Can Really Cost In Car Rental
A couple of quotes:
"Rental car companies are collecting hefty fees from consumers who drive through electronic toll collection booths without paying -- in some cases nearly 10 times the amount of the original toll."
"Gaby Garcia, a Texas Tollway spokeswoman, said consumers who don't have the electronic gadget needed to pay on Highway 121 are photographed and later get an invoice from the state with a $1 service fee charge tacked on. If a rental car is used in a toll violation, the rental agency receives the bill, she said. The agency does not limit the fees the rental agency can add on."
What I have done in the past it to make a log of all the tolls I had missed, sent a certified letter to the state for payment in full and then sent a certified copy to the rental car company to prove that I did pay the tolls. That was 3 years ago and haven't heard a word since.
Kind of interesting on how some of the fees went down, but are still anywhere between $5-$25 for a $0.60 toll. And that in the state of Texas, the fee can be as high as $100.
