Lei Lounge Compliment - Great unique dining experience

Review by sunshine619 on 2008-03-03
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS (SAN DIEGO), CALIFORNIA -- We ate at a new place called Lei Lounge recently, its in an "up and coming" neighborhood that we aren't very familiar with but we know someone who bartends there and after looking at the website decided to go.
The place was small, you walk in and the decor is spectacular, like you just stepped onto a Hawaiian island, the front part is a bar with a water wall, great lighting, ect. The back part is the restaurant, its open air with tiki heaters and fire pits, tables in the middle and private cabanas surrounding the perimeter. You need a party of 5 or more for a cabana, but it doesn't cost any extra. So its like VIP treatment for free! (They were pretty slow at 7pm thurs and let us have one even though there was only 2 of us, but our friend says on Fri and Sat after about 10 it gets really busy until closing at 2am) They have a full bar and huge specialty drink menu. I tried a pomegranite martini which was delicious even though I usually stick to beer. It was double the standard martini size and from 5-9pm all drinks are half off so it was only 4 bucks! All entres are "global tapas" so they are served appitizer size and you share. The selection is huge and varries so there is really somthing for everyone. We tried the wassabi mashed potatoes, lettuce wraps, kobe beef kabobs, and crab cakes. Everything was excellent and there was so much more I would like to try. The prices are extremely reasonable and the ambiance is one of a kind. I would recommend this hidden gem to anyone, and we will go again for sure.

Thanks Sunshine! Will put it on the San Diego food run list. Some web site they have. You have a favorite haunt in Little Italy? (VH)
