CMI Enterprises Informative - FHA refund recovery scam

Review by D on 2008-03-07
SAGINAW, MICHIGAN -- I was contacted by telephone by a company called GMI Incorporated, based(they said) in Portland Oregon.

They called themselves a 3rd party recovery program.

The idea was to contact homeowners who had paid off their FHA loans and inform them that they had money coming back on their loans.

All I had to do was to send CMI check for $69 dollars and they would send out a computer generated list of people to contact.

For every contact I successfully made, the U.S GOVERNMENT would send ME a check for between $400 and $800 dollars.

Pretty sweet eh?
I called the number I got when I spoke to their operator and of course I got the same sales pitch repeated to me before..
The number is unlisted on line but for what it's worth it is 971-285-3130 in Portland, Oregon..

I have forwarded this information to the local FBI office and await their call back in order to satisfy my curiosity if this is a new scam or an old racket with a new name..

For all you folks that are new to this site, remember, if you have to pay someone for the opportunity to make a buck, it's almost always a scam...

This is somewhat legitimate. The FHA does refund a portion of the mortgage insurance premium when you pay off an FHA mortgage. But they don't automatically refund your money and most folks don't know to ask for it.

So this business has popped up in the past few years where you get these lists of paid off loans and you track down the homeowner at their new address - you offer to help them get their $$$ back for a percentage of the total.

But the lists are free from the FHA - you don't need this company in Portland charging you $69 for the list. So that's why I say it's somewhat legitimate - there is a list you will get. But the big problem is this - these lists are so well known that as soon as FHA comes out with a new one these people get bombarded with phone calls. The chances of you actually finding someone that's entitled to a refund is pretty slim.

third party tracing is not new....ordinary research would have shown you that the government doesnt pay third party tracers....hud/fha clearly states that third party tracers are legal on its webpage, your problem is with a specific group of people...while i dont think its right that you trusted an untrustworthy group of people ,i equally disagree with you bashing all third party tracers
