Kentucky Fried Chicken Informative - New on the menu... - Halal - Original Recipe or Extra Crispy
Many of you may or may not know that Dearborn MI (adjacent to Detroit) has a very large Muslim population. I was aware that Muslims are restricted to certain foods, but didn't know to what extent, aside from no alcohol or pork.
An article in today's Detroit Free Press explains some of the constraints, such as the animal must be facing Mecca during slaughter and the butcher has to say a prayer invoking God. As such, chain restaurants aren't places Muslims have been able to frequent in the past.
One KFC location in Dearborn has changed that and the sign in front of the store states so. Separate fryers are used for 'halal,' ("what is permitted"), and other fryers are used for the prior menu offerings.
Another chain restaurant following the lead is McDonald's. Of the 13,700 locations nation wide, only two locations (both in Dearborn) are selling halal Chicken McNuggets and sandwiches.
I don't get to Dearborn very often, but the next time I'm there I'll make a point to try the halal KFC. I can't imagine it would taste any different than non-halal chicken, just as I can't distinguish between Kosher and non-Kosher food.
As stated in the article, this offers Muslims the opportunity to stop at fast food restaurants where otherwise they could eat only at Middle Eastern restaurants or cook their meals at home.
