Dollar Rent A Car Systems, Inc. Informative - Bait and Switch
LAX, CALIFORNIA -- I also had a bait and switch at Dollar!
The man behind the counter asked me if I wanted basic or extended insurance coverage. I told him that I did not need extra insurance coverage because the rental was covered by my own car insurance. I have done this successfully for twenty years with every car I have rented. He responded that I had to have insurance and he would put me down for basic coverage. He waved a paper in front of me and told me to sign. I signed it. On the way out I stopped one of the mechanics and asked him the necessity for insurance, he told me I would have to go back to the customer service line.
At that time I thought it was only $35 so I did not want to get in the long line again. When I returned my car, I discovered what a big deal it was. I was charged $429 for what was supposed to be a $200 car rental ($130 per week with additional taxes and fees). On top of what I was expecting I was charged an additional $9.00 a day for LDW1, $5.99 a day for UMP, $12.99 a day for SLI and $4.99 a day for roadsafe.
I have no idea what these service I paid for were or what benefit I was supposed to get from them. The extent of explanation I got at the counter was that I had to take basic coverage. Well Dollar's basic coverage costs too much for me!
If you ever rent from Dollar, which I do not recommend, carefully review the charges!!
