Delta Airlines Complaint - Price gouging - unaccompanied minors
LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY -- With the excepction of Southwest (of course), the airlines apply an extra fee for tickets for unaccompanied minors. Until 4/1, it was a fee of $50 each way. Now, the fee has increased to $100, meaning that flying a minor on a round trip is an extra $200. This is absolutely outrageous. I understand that there is additional liability for the airline when minors are flying, but the additional cost involved does not justify such an exorbitant price.
I live in KY and my son's father lives in SC. It would be a 10 hour drive, so the only viable option for my son to visit his dad is to fly. Therefore, he takes a direct flight from Cincinnati to Columbia about once a month. I wonder how many other children are in this same situation.
I know the airline industry is in a mess, but gouging families with children is just unacceptable. There is no additinal cost in handling minors. I take my son to the gate. When he boards, an attendant (any one that is in between boarding other flights) walks him down the hall and to the plane. Once at the plane, the flight attendant makes sure he gets into his seat and brings him a coke. When the flight lands (1 hour 20 minutes later), someone walks him from the plane to the gate, where his father is waiting for him. The attendent checks ID and gets a signature. That's it.. No additional employees required in the airport, no additional flight attendents required during the flight. MAYBE 10 minutes extra time is involved to walk him to and from the gate and get a signature. - The airline also does this for adults requiring special assistance (e.g., wheelchairs), and there is no extra charge for them. So why "stick it" to parents?
As far as I can tell, Delta is taking advantage of children. Charging an additional fee is reasonable, but not $200! There is NO justification for this - it is simply an easy way to hit the bottom line. I feel totally violated, and for my son to see his father, I have no choice but to pay this. Actually, that's not even true. Delta will not get any more $$ out of me, because now, I will not be able to afford to send him as often.
Businesses have to cover their costs and make a profit. I get that. Raise the ticket prices for everyone to cover the high costs of fuel costs - no problem. But catering to business travelers and raping families is just outrageously unethical. Delta - and the other airlines that have done this - should be ashamed. There is nothing worse than feeling helpless and at the mercy of a crooked, socially-irresponsible business empire.
