CitizenTax Complaint - CitizenTax Does Not Provide Copies of State Returns

Review by consumed on 2008-04-09
I filed with CitizenTax for the first time this year. It has been a very bad experience.

For a quick look at CitizenTax's approach to customer service, visit their site and attempt to figure out how to contact them. (Hint: It's not behind the "Contact Us" link.)

My particular experience: I filed my Federal return and continued to State. However, CitizenTax filed my State return before I had completed it. Dismayed, I attempted to go back. No dice--the return was officially "At State." It was then categorized "Duplicate," a status for which CitizenTax will provide only the information that you will have to contact your state tax office.

I am an English professor, web developer, and proofreader by profession. I'm very meticulous and am skeptical of their assertion that I had the opportunity to review and print my return. However, I am willing to accept that this could have been my error. Since I know the return does not contain all my information and is therefore inaccurate, I am prepared to file an amended return with my state.

However, I cannot do so without a copy of my original State return. CitizenTax will not provide me with a copy. Repeated inquiries with their Customer Service department (which requires a separate registration process) have resulted only in the information that I already had a chance to print my return, and they will not provide another copy in any form.

I'm now in touch with my state tax office to see what can be done about this mess. Please carefully review others' experiences before deciding to use CitizenTax. I have had a very negative experience.

Excellent post. Why would the company be set up so that once a client declines (if you did) to print a state return, the client can NEVER print the return? What if you needed a copy for some other purpose later? Thanks for the warning on these guys.
