Enterprise Rent-A-Car Complaint - Overtaxed?
SELMA, CALIFORNIA -- I rented a car (Prius) from Enterprise-rent-a-car in Selma California. The daily charge was $32.50. The insurance company (USAA) was covering $30.00 per day. The rental was from March 26,2008, and it was returned on the early morning of April 17, 2008. At $ 2.50 per day I estimated the total to be around $ 57.50, not including tax. They charged $ 112.21 on April 17, 2008, stating that the tax is charged on a daily basis, and so each day the tax is added to the charge, rather than on the total amount when you return the vehicle. Is this legal? When I rented a car before this was not the case.
Also, they would not let me pay by check. They demanded cash, or a credit card. This immediately raised red flags, so I paid the $ 112.21 in cash rather than give them a credit card. This just didn't sound right to me, and I wondered if it was legal to continually add tax, and then add a charge and tax you again on the tax.
Your response is appreciated.
