Suncoast Energys Informative - Gas Price Gouging - Gas Price

Review by Sherre on 2008-05-08
ORLANDO, FLORIDA -- Suncoast Energys Gas Station at 5928 Butler National Drive, Orlando, FL (airport exit) charged us $4.849 for a gallon of 87 octane gasoline near the Orlando International Airport, located across the street from two rental car agencies.

There is no street sign with prices posted to warn unsuspecting traveler they are about to be ripped off in a serious way. Price in Orlando was $3.489. Even fill up with the rental car agency was a $1+ less per gallon.

Go one mile further down the road for a fair and reasonable fill-up.

They have been in most newspapers, on the evening news and on the web for months - I thought everyone knew about them by now.

They have a monopoly position at MCO for people returning rental cars and they take advantage of it. By the time you realize how much their gas is, it's getting late and you can't go shopping for a better deal. It's all supply and demand.

A lot of gas stations by airports are more expensive than in the city for a couple reasons. First, Hugh mentioned supply and demand - people who do not fly a lot don't know that gas is expensive by airport, and once they realize the cost it is too late to go back into the city to hunt for cheaper gas at the risk of missing the flight.

Also, unlike stations by residential areas or shopping centers, not many people besides rental car drivers and maybe airline employees will just happen to be at the airport in need of fuel. The higher cost compensates the lack of repeat customers.

Property values by airports can be really expensive. While a lot of people are not lining up to build a house at the end of the runway, many hotels, rental car agencies and companies like shipping and transport companies pay top dollar to be by the action of the airport.

Also, a lot of business travelers just don't care how much gas costs - they just want to get things done quickly, and they will expense the bill to the employers anyway.

Very nice comment Ben There! Your information is 100% accurate. Although gas prices near airports is much higher, I do not characterize it as 'price gouging'.

On 8/16 when I was on vacation in Orlando recently I noticed this gas station. The price was $5.69 a gallon for regular. There is no sign on the outside of the station to let people know how much gas is. They find out when they get to the pump. There are multiple gas stations about 1 mile from there with gas at regular prices ($3.89). This is price gauging and they should be stopped.
