Suncom Complaint - No Service Anywhere - Coverage

Coverage - Complaint
Review by Antha on 2008-05-18
SUMMERVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA -- I recently moved from NY to SC, and I had to switch my cell phone provider. I used to have T-Mobile (which I never had a problem with ever), but once I moved I had to switch because T-Mobile didn't cover the part of South Carolina I moved to. My mother picked SunCom without letting me review it first, which was a horrible decision on her part.

I don't get reception in my house AT ALL. I don't get reception in most buildings as a matter of a fact. In school, the mall, movies, or just houses, I never get reception- or if I do, it's only one bar when I stand next to a window or on a chair.
A majority of my calls are dropped, especially if they're over five minutes long at a time.
There's many times where I will call someone and even though I hear the phone ringing through my cell phone, the person who I'm calling never has a missed call or the phone ring. It's like the call is never actually sent out. It's really confusing and frustrating.

I would not suggest SunCom to even someone I hate. It's not worth it, and I can't wait until my contract is up this September.

It's my understanding that if a cellular provider cannot deliver service to your primary use area (home or business) they are in fact incapable of providing you service and this alone should void any contract you signed with them and should allow you to terminate it and switch to someone else. Check with your local Public Utilities Commission (or whoever deals with that situation in your area) for advice.

We got out of a AT&T cell contract because we had to go outside to use our cell phones. We went with Verizon and it works great. AT&T was forced to release us and our numbers which we ported over to Verizon.

Thanks for the info dc and super. I live in a rural area and have never been able to use my cell inside the home--and if so, only for a few minutes before it cuts off. They show are area on their map, and if you go outside, it does work. If you walk a block away, it works great.

I have Verizon and didn't know I could get out of the contract this way. The problem is, how will I know if what I go to works better? It will be a guessing game, at best. The thing I do like about Verizon is that it has worked everywhere we travel. Oh, the dilemma!

I was told by a cell rep that if you ever wanted to get out of your contract, go to that companies coverage area site map on the internet and find a part of the city that has no coverage, then call them up and let them know that your moving to that area (give an actual address there) they will type it in and "discover" that they cant serve you there and should advise you then that service will have to be terminated with no penalty to you. Dishonest? probably. but with all the horror stories I see about cell phone companies, I think your guilt level should be fairly small.

I think my daughter tried this angle--and it worked! She didn't feel any guilt at all because she was continuously getting bad service where she lived. It would be pretty easy for me to find somewhere out here with no coverage--hmmm.....
