Best Western Hotels International, Inc. Compliment - Monterey's Victorian Inn - Victorian Inn

Compliment
Review by SoCalSteve on 2008-06-24
MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA -- Last weekend the wife and I went to Monterey for our fifth anniversary. We stayed at The Victorian Inn, a few blocks from Cannery Row.We had a great room with a perfect view of the Monterey Bay. The room had vaulted ceilings, private balcony with table and chairs, jetted bathtub with duel shower heads, and a huge king size featherbed. There is also a CD player next to the bed, complete with John Tesh CD's (lmfao).

They have afternoon wine and cheese receptions (if you are into that, I'm not).
The room was very quiet, did not hear any of our neighbors going at it. Cannery Row is within walking distance from the hotel, fishermans wharf was about a mile away (also within walking distance).

The mornings were spent out on the private balcony reading the complimentary morning paper, enjoying the view of the pristine California coastline, and planning the day.

This is our second stay at this hotel, and will be back soon.

SoCalSteve, I envy you. My wife and I lived in Pacific Grove for a while and miss it very much. There are few other places like the Monterey Peninsula.

Excellent review on a really nice place. Have not stayed there in a few years but always try to stay there when in the area for a convention or something. Another nice property is the Quail Lodge in Carmel. (VH)

"The biggest of the fires was the Indians Fire near Monterey, south of San Francisco, which has scorched 57,100 acres and was threatening 1,000 homes."

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Hundreds of wildfires blazed across northern California on Monday, threatening thousands of homes as the region baked under a ferocious heatwave.

According to figures released by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Calfire), more than 700 scattered fires covering 112,500 acres (45,500 hectares) were raging, leaving around 5,500 residences at risk.

Local media reported that many of the fires were caused by lightning strikes in forests left tinder-dry after record low rainfalls across California. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state-wide drought on June 4.

Schwarzenegger said he had never known so many fires to break out at the same time. "I was shocked yesterday when I heard we had 520 fires all over the state," Schwarzenegger said.

"I've been governor now for more than four years and I've never heard that number. And then I discovered this morning it had increased to some 700 fires."

Schwarzenegger said some 4,300 firefighters and 372 engines had been deployed to tackle the fires.

The biggest of the fires was the Indians Fire near Monterey, south of San Francisco, which has scorched 57,100 acres and was threatening 1,000 homes. The fire was 58 percent contained as of 8:00 am (1500 GMT), Calfire reported.

North of San Francisco in Mendocino County, some 525 homes were said to be at risk from a complex of 90 fires that have so far ripped through 7,625 acres. Five homes had already been destroyed by the blaze, which was not at all contained.

California is frequently hit by scorching wildfires due to its dry climate, Santa Ana winds and recent housing booms which have seen housing spread rapidly into rural and densely forested areas.

Last October, devastating wildfires were among the worst in Californian history, leaving eight people dead, destroying 2,000 homes, displacing 640,000 people and causing one billion dollars in damage.
