My Cafe Complaint - Employers Who Refuse To Pay
PALM HARBOR, FLORIDA -- The owners of My Cafe, a small breakfast and lunch dive in Palm Harbor, Florida, likes to hire people to work for them and pay them under the table. Then, upon the employees decision to resign, they refuse to give them their final pay. While is is against the law to refuse payment for wages and hours worked, it is also against the law to offer to pay employees under the table. So upon departure, these owners tell their help that if they want their pay, the should "sue" them. They claim to not be liable because they have no proof of employment for the individual because they weren't paid on the books. It is quite funny that the owners would act in this way considering they have ties to working for the government which makes them completely aware of the violations, and that they are committing tax fraud.
This has occurred in at least four instances that I am aware of. They really need to be investigated by the IRS and the dept of Wage and Hour.
