General Motors Informative - GM is heavy handed and dumb
Driving Route 66 through Kingman, AZ last week, I was amused by the "Corvette parking only" signs as well as other branded souvenirs and knick knacks available in the nostalgia shops. But I was dismayed if not surprised to be informed by a shopkeeper, that all the merchandise, from refrigerator magnets to those parking signs, bearing either GM likenesses or language, was being cleared and will no longer be available. Why?
Because GM's overpaid lawyers with entirely too much time on their hands, have decided to target mom and pop merchandisers who fail to pay GM a royalty on each key chain or bottle opener bearing a Corvette likeness. Apparently, one cannot even write the word "Corvette" on a sign (no graphic) without paying GM for the right to do so.
She showed me her recent invoice which included notation verifying that due to GM legal action, no merchandise bearing GM likenesses or model names would be available.
This strikes me as not only heavy handed, but just stupid, a "twofer". What does GM accomplish by this? They pay their lawyers to remove their presence from the merchandise shops. The "[Rambler] [Ford] [etc] parking only" signs, etc will still be sold. GM is actually paying to eliminate free advertising! What genius invented this marketing strategy?
I suggest that customers cease buying from a company that not only shows it's utter disregard for consumers, but which is also not very bright.
