Washington Mutual Complaint - High APR/Closed my Account
SALEM, OREGON -- I have been a customer of WaMu for several years. Like others I pay my bills on line. I always try to pay all my bills the 5-7 days in advance as they tell you to. I even paid my WaMu credit card through my WaMu checking account online. So imagine my surprise when my statement suddenly showed that I made my payment late when I had not, and they raised my APR to 39%! That was double what it had been! I asked them to lower my APR, and they said that they look at everyone's accounts regularly to see if they warrant a change in the APR, and mine didn't warrant it. I stopped using this card for several months. I decided to try using it again, and after using it for a month, I called and asked what my APR was. It had come down to 28%. I asked if they could lower it, and was given the same old line.
I figured I would wait a week or so to see if they did indeed lower it. I went to use the card 2 days after I made this call, and my card was declined! I was very embarrassed! I called and they said that they permanently closed the account on the same day that I called about my APR! (how's that for timing?) They said they closed it for lack of use. I asked about that fact that I had been using the card for a month without any problems, the woman's only comment was that I would get a letter soon explaining that they closed my account, (after the fact), and there was nothing they could/would do about it.
This is their version of customer service! I don't think we need this kind of customer service. I'm going to start looking into other banks.
