DirecTV Inc Complaint - Deceptive Billing Practices
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK -- In February of 2006, I entered into an agreement for 2 years. I received 3 regular boxes and 1 DVR as part of the promotion they were running. In November 2007, the DVR had problems and when I called Tech Support they attempted to fix it over the phone. They said if it happened again the DVR would have to be changed out.
A few days latter the problem reoccurred and I called Tech Support and they sent me a new DVR unit and I returned the defective one in the box provided. Up to this point I was very happy with Direct TV. In June of 2008, 29 months after the start of the contract, I called to cancel my account since I could no longer afford the expense. I was told that I would have to return the DVR or be charged up to $400 for the unit.
Since I completed the agreed 2 year contract I didn't understand why they wanted me to return the DVR, but I could keep the 3 regular boxes. They sent me a box and I returned the DVR. When they received the DVR, I received a bill stating that I owed them $204.34 for early cancellation. When I spoke to Customer Service they said that the contract had been extended automatically for another 2 years when I had the unit replaced in November 2007. Up to this point no one had even mentioned extension to me.
They further stated that service is not included in the contract price and if I wanted "insurance" for repairs, I would have had to pay an extra monthly charge. No one ever mentioned insurance to me either. I felt that they were in violation of our agreement by not giving me equipment that would last the full term of the initial 2 years. They said the charges would not be reversed and they deducted it from my credit card which they had on file without my permission. I used to pay monthly by debit card and they had my number on file.
I called again to speak to someone else and this individual said that the unit was under warranty and I should be receiving a refund check within 2 weeks. After 2 weeks I called and spoke to a "manager" and she said the charges were not being reversed and I would not receive a refund. Later I found that this company had been sued by the state of New York for fraudulent practices, but the fraudulent practices continue.
When I asked for the names of the corporate personnel, they refused to give me their names. To me this sounds like a company that is in severe difficulty to have to resort to stealing money from its customers. I would recommend to everyone, "DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH DIRECT TV".
