DirecTV Inc Complaint - DirecTV Lied to me
EL SEGUNDO, CALIFORNIA -- I had purchased 2 ultimate TV boxes years ago. When one of them stopped working, I got an old DirecTV box from a friend who had gone with another provider and who had owned the box. I hooked it up and DirecTV activated it. I wanted to make sure that I wasn't going to receive additional charges relating to that box since I owned it now, so I was transferred to a rep who said that the box should not have been activated. They then proceeded to de-activate it. I was not happy. I told the rep that I didn't want to pay a tech $100 to come to the house to tell me I needed a new box and that I absolutely did not want to lease a box.
I said I would consider my options including canceling DirecTV and looking at other providers. It was at that point the rep put me on hold and then came back and said that I was such a good and long standing customer that she would send me a new box for free, that I would own it and not have to pay lease fees. She said I would just have to commit to using DirecTV for the next couple of years. I was happy with that and agreed. The receiver came and was activated. Later, I received a confirmation which had nothing but zero's in the dollar spaces at the bottom. It gave me comfort that they had held up their end of the bargain.
When I received the next bill, it was loaded with fees related to the new receiver. I called to complain and was smugly told that DirecTV only leases their equipment. I am sure they are sophisticated enough to keep files of all their calls for liability reasons. If they listened to that first call, they would absolutely agree that I was lied to! I have zero tolerance for people who lie and they should too. I'm finished with DirecTV. I told them I want to cancel the service and they said they would bill me over $400 because of early cancellation.
All I wanted was to stop my service; return the receiver in its original packaging; and go away quietly.
