Hertz Informative - Charged us for an empty gas tank even though we returned it full
FT. LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA -- My Husband and I rented an Economy class car from the Ft. Laud Int. Airport on Thursday, Sept 18 and returned it on Sunday, Sept 21. Our e-mail confirmation guaranteed our rate at $76 for the whole time period--no frills--just the car. Upon picking up the car, my husband signed the paperwork which clearly stated a $76 charge. We also denied prepaid gas.
I just checked my bank statement this morning, and it turns out they charged me $153 in all. I called to ask why, and she said "because you didn't return the car with a full tank, we charged you an extra $77 in gas fees." I asked her if she would like me to prove from my bank statement that I was at a gas station filling the car up at 11:20 PM and I dropped the car off at 11:30 PM with a completely full tank. Sarah said that wasn't necessary, and she would take the extra gas charges off our bill.
A few of my co-workers confirmed this morning that they too had the EXACT same gas experience with Hertz in the past. I'd like to warn everyone who uses them to keep records, and make sure you remember the price that you sign the paperwork for. Also, check your bank statement to make sure they didn't tack anything extra on. I don't know who the idiot is in the car drop-off area that writes that a gas tank is empty, when it's clearly full. Or perhaps they figure if they tack on these false gas charges to 10 people, at least 2 won't notice it on their bank statement.
Either way, do be careful. Take pictures of the gas gauge and the car condition before and after you use the car.
