SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA -- I'd read some less than flattering reviews on Dollar, but since their quote was much less expensive than their competitors, I decided to give them a try. I booked my reservation through Orbitz (who has been great in dealing with this complaint even though it wasn't their fault, they responded within 20 min. and offered options). The reservation was for an economy car, for 3 days at $27 a day, I also purchased damage protection for $36. The balance on the reservation was $98.20 (the $36 was charged immediately).
When I arrived in Sacramento the agreement they gave me was for $143.12. I had shown them the reservation form but thought perhaps I'd misunderstood and the damage protection had not yet been charged. When I returned home and compared the receipt to the reservation I noticed I had in fact been charged twice for insurance protection. I called and emailed Dollar to resolve the issue, they refuse to refund any part of the charges.
Dollar's online rates are misleading, I paid more for their economy car ($179 total, including both insurance policies I was charged for) than I've paid for standard cars at other rental companies. They are not willing to so much as investigate if one of their employees possibly misread the reservation and made a mistake on the contract. I would not recommend them to anyone or rent from them again.
