America Online Complaint - Difficulty in Cancellation
TROY, ALABAMA -- Since I now use a cable modem I have no reason to subscribe to AOL. Several months ago I called to cancel my service and let the rep talk me into a $9.95 per month service (after a 30-day "free" service -- which I never got). On Dec. 31, 03, I called AOL to totally cancel the service. I have never been treated so rudely in my life. I spoke with a rep, Ivan, who insisted that I had to have a reason for wanting to cancel before he could cancel. Repeatedly I told him my reason was that I didn't need it anymore. That was not sufficient, he claimed. I asked to speak to a supervisor. He refused to let me because the call had not reached an "escalated" status. He said that he had to have a reason because it was company policy and his job was at stake. I told him I did not care; to please just cancel my account. Finally, he said that he did not need a reason..."I'll just terminate you!" I said, "Great!" That was the end of it....I hope. I am now anxious to see if AOL continues to bill my Amex card for the $9.95 per month. Be assured that I will warn anyone who mentions AOL service not to use it. It seems that some consumer agency somewhere could do something about the abuse users of AOL have to put up with when they try to cancel their account.
