Home Depot Complaint - Green Nazis
CORSICANA, TEXAS -- During a visit to Home Depot in Corsicana today to purchase incandescent light bulbs, I was accosted by a salesman who berated me for not selecting the new swirl fluorescent bulbs. He espoused the rhetorical green mantra of energy savings the bulb guaranteed. When I asked him about the Mercury in the his bulb and the vapor which the EPA considers a neurotoxin, and the very involved and specific disposal guidelines that actually negate any potential benefit the bulb might offer. After a deer-in-the-headlights glance, and a very pregnant pause, he told me these bulbs were the wave of the future and soon there would be no incandescent bulbs. With that, he convinced me. I put the 6 pack of incandescent bulbs back and...left the store without purchasing anything. As I was leaving, he turned his sights on two elderly women who'd picked up some incandescent bulbs... If you think my concerns over the dangers of mercury are reactionary, just read the little warning on the back of the fluorescent bulb box and the EPA's guidelines for disposal.
Typical of the green movement is a rush to any alternative whether it's viable or not. So we save energy (think anti-coal ideology) but put mercury in our drinking water. And guess which bulbs Home Depot profits most from. THAT'S the bottom line.
