Wachovia Compliment - Debit Card Security - Cardholder Security
FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA -- I am a secret shopper, and my assignment tonight involved auditing three different gas stations. It is necessary to make a fuel purchase at each location. I paid $5.00 for gas at each of the three stations.
After I had made my third purchase (within 45 minutes), I promptly received a call on my cell phone. I let it go to voicemail so it would not interrupt the rest of my duties. The message was left by a Wachovia representative from their Security department, informing me to dial a 1-800 number to confirm the most recent transactions with the card. Until I made these confirmations, my card was blocked from use.
I called the number left in the voicemail, and the automated menu read back the most recent charges, and required me to dial "1" to confirm them. After letting it "update my records" for a moment, my card was available for use again.
Some may consider this a major inconvenience. However, in a day of peaking levels of identity theft and other fraud, I must applaud Wachovia for responding quickly to a seemingly suspicious situation.
I'd much rather take a few minutes to confirm some charges to the card, than spending days and even months having to make banking/credit repairs for damages incurred through criminal activity.
