Lowe's Complaint - Storm Door Installation
PISCATAWAY, NEW JERSEY -- The only experience, and a poor one at that, was attempting to get a 36 inch storm door installed on the front door of my home from the Lowe's in Piscataway, NJ. Lowe's usually charges $149, but through 11/26/08 the charge was reduced to $129. After paying $35 to have my door 'measured', the estimate came back from the installer for an extra charge for $67.50. This would have brought the installation to over $200 w/tax for a $198 door!According to the installer, since my door opening is 36 1/4 inches a 'lattice' would need to be added to the door frame to bring it in that quarter inch. The Lowes salesman actually tried to tell me this was a much more cost efficient way than ordering a custom door. What a crock! The information on the side of the box of the storm door itself at Lowes shows that is is for an opening from 35 7/8 to 36 3/8. Last time I looked, 36 1/4 was less than 36 3/8! Out of three estimates I received for the door, only Lowes said I needed any extra work done-everyone else said it was a standard installation. I walked out.
I said I rather lose my $35 than to use a door everyday that reminded me how I got ripped off. I lost my $35 but learned a valuable lesson-and I will never set foot in another Lowes again.
