Best Buy Complaint - Geek Squad Incompetent
GAITHERSBURG, MARYLAND -- We had an "unmountable boot error" on our laptop and were unable to boot up the computer. We called the company we bought the laptop from, who told us the hard drive was bad and recommended we get the information on the hard drive recovered and backed up. So we brought the hard drive to the Best Buy Geek Squad. They gladly took our money ($99.99). Two days later, I received an automated call from the Geek Squad, saying the laptop was done. Since the call was automated, I assumed they had recovered the data. Not so! They said they were unable to recover the data, but would send it out for recovery (a minimum of $250 extra). I said no and took the laptop home. Once I was home, I attempted to boot up the laptop using instructions I found on Google. The laptop booted up & we were able to recover ALL of the files. We went back to Best Buy and asked for a refund. After all, if a computer novice was able to recover the files, shouldn't they? They made us wait 45 minutes to speak with a supervisor, who refused to refund the majority of the money (offered a $35 refund). Asked to speak with the store manager, who offered the same.
Best Buy never provided the services we paid for (data recovery) and said it would be impossible without sending it out. Obviously, that wasn't true because we were able to recover the data using Google instructions in less than 30 minutes.
