University Dermatology Consultants / Dayton Skin Surgery Center Complaint - Undisclosed Fees - Biopsy Exam
CINCINNATI, OHIO -- I went to a clinic in Ohio to have a skin sore diagnosed. A biopsy was recommended. Because I pay out of pocket, it is my custom to have all charges I'm responsible for laid out before I commit to any procedures. I'd been to this clinic previously and I'd had no complaints on those occasions. When I asked the doctor what were the charges we're looking at here, she identified two charges: one for biopsy and the usual office visit fee. Before I left the office, I settled these charges.
More than two weeks later, I received a bill for the biopsy pathology report from University Dermatology Consultants. It was a hefty bill. Now, I'm not trying to avoid paying a bill that I'm aware of when I contract for a service.
I believe that even though the doctor omitted the lab fee for the biopsy from disclosure when I agreed to the biopsy--she might not know how much, University Dermatology Consultants should still have gotten my ok before processing the biopsy request. I didn't know about UDC's role in this and all the while I was thinking the fee charged for the biopsy at the clinic covered the pathology report. Since UDC is collecting the payment, disclosing the fee is their responsibility.
My experience highlights the lack of transparency in clinics and hospitals when it comes to the costs associated with a visit. Nobody wants to be responsible for a fee that hasn't been submitted for prior approval because it may be an amount that may cause them to reconsider.
