Gold's Gym International, Inc Informative - Unethical Business practices
WINTER SPRINGS, FLORIDA -- Goldís Gym in Winter Spring, Florida used lies and deception in signing me to a 1-year contract. In June of 2003 I had just moved into friendsí house in Winter Springs on a temporary basis while they were out of the country. At the time I was waiting for the completion of my new house in Apopka (over 20 miles away from Winter Springs) and I needed to find a reasonable short-term deal with a nearby Gym until my scheduled move within 4 months. I stopped at Goldís Gym in Winter Springs and explained the situation to its manager. She seemed to be extremely helpful and told me that I can sign for a 4-month period but I have to pay a 1-month cancellation fees at the end of the period. I was hesitant to agree to this stipulation considering that there are also a $49 initiation and a $53.49 application fees increasing the monthly cost to highly unaffordable levels. At this point the manager volunteered to waive the initiation fees to help defray the 1-month cancellation fees at the end of the 4-month period. I was appreciative of the managerís flexibility and signed the contract without reading it.
In November 2003, I submitted the cancellation form expecting the end this temporary relationship with the Gym and its management. On December 4th, I received a letter from Goldís Gymís regional headquarters in Altamonte Springs, Florida notifying me of my obligation for a full year membership. I explained the situation and asked them to clear it with the Winter Springs Gym. To my utter disappointment the manager at Winter Springs denied our agreement and insisted that I signed a standard 1-year contract. At this point I checked the contract for the first time and realized that I have been deceived and fleeced through lies and lack of business and moral ethics.
