Circuit City Informative - Liquidation Sale - Returns, Etc

Returns, Etc
Review by jktshff1 on 2009-01-17
Let's hope we don't see a lot of "I can't take it back" posts

The Circuit City liquidation sale will draw plenty of bargain hunters, but buyer beware.

Typically, closeout sales are final: no refunds or exchanges, so think twice before snapping up a big-ticket item like an HDTV. Also, keep in mind that closeout prices often aren't as rock-bottom low as you'd think; make sure to comparison shop online, and don't be fooled by big "75% OFF!" signs on items that have been marked up.

jkt, ya beat me to it by about 10 minutes. Very good advice. These liquidators general do not provide real discounts. Many times you can find the equivalent items at a another store at a better price. Any discount shown is probably based on MSRP not CC original selling price. As jkt said, do your homework before you shell out your money. (VH)

I was just thinking the same thing before I signed on here this morning...Thanks for the warning.

I went to my local CC at 9am. The prices were not raised to MSRP, they were the regular prices. I agree that better prices can be found elsewhere. Merchandise purchased before Jan 16 can be returned by January 30 for a refund but not exchanged. They will be accepting CC gift cards until January 30. After that they will be worthless. Extended warranties will still be honored because they were issued by third parties. Items in for repair will be completed.

I guess all the people on here who hope CC would go out of business are cheering. I wonder if they would cheer so loudly to know 30,000 people in this country are losing their jobs. Other than that, once you buy electronics from a store, doesn't it become the manufacturer's problem if something goes wrong under warranty? I wondered how that worked with close out stuff. Oh, and a liquidation sale is about making money, not about getting rid of overhead.

I think the worst aspect of this, well, second worst considering all those people losing their jobs, is that now there is no competition for Best Buy. If you thought they were arrogant before, wait and see what happens now.

I cannot think of anything else to add that hasn't already been said. This whole thing is very very sad for the people who lost their jobs and for the consumer who now has one less choice. Fry's is still around but it just is not the same as CC or BB.

I was reading about this last night. I find it odd that there are 500+ stores in the US with around 34,000 employees, and there are almost 800 stores in Canada with only 3000 employees. Canadian CC's are not going out of business. Some good news is that employees here will continue to receive paychecks and benefits for 60 days. I feel so sorry for all these families though.
I also read that there is still a chance for CC to be bought before all is over, however if that were to happen, CC would likely turn into an online company only.

jc, that's why they are liquidating, they could not find a buyer.
Posted by justcuz3993 on 2009-01-17:
yes, that's what the article I read said, but it also said that there is still a small chance someone could take them over before the liquidation is final.

turn around now jkt, and take your spanking!
Posted by jktshff1 on 2009-01-17:

I went to CC today. There is a sign on the door saying "All Sales Final". 20% discount on CD/DVDs and only 10% on everything else. Not that big of a sale yet but there were tons of people in line buying. It's a shame so many people are losing their jobs.
Posted by lorrwill on 2009-01-19:
Wow all of you who say that Best Buy now has no competition surprise me.

I have only shopped at a Best Buy once and was not impressed. Ever hear of Fry's? (That's were I do the bulk of my B&M purchasing.) Or this thing called the Interwebs? Tiger Direct? New Egg?

Yes I am sorry that a lot of people are losing their jobs. Take a look at some of the managerial actions that lead to that, eh?

I was at my local CC this weekend and I didn't find the prices to be that great either. I found a couple of items though.
I will miss Circuit City. I always liked them more than Best Buy and I feel sorry for the employees that are losing their jobs.

A couple of years ago, My wife and I went into a CC store to purchase a microwave. We saw one that supposed to be on clearance. We wondered what was the original price was. So lifted the sales tag on the countered to see what was the original price. When I lifted the tag to my surprised that the so called clearance price was 1 CENT HIGHER than the original price. We finally found a sales clerk to ask her why this was so and told her it was no way a sale price. She got a hold of a manger and we asked him some questions about this and he got rude and just down right nasty. I guess he did not like being questioned of how a so called clearance price being higher than a regular price. We was told to leave and I had not been back except for one time last year. No wonder they went belly up. Also my dad a year earlier had it out with CC and he was sick with cancer.

It's certainly worth noting that thousands will be without jobs because of this. However, how many people noticed when Circuit City made wholesale layoffs a few years ago of their valuable sales staff that had been loyal for years? They opted for the 18-year old clerks, and that ruined the stores, in my humble opinion. Sometimes things aren't as obvious, but they can be just as devastating.

Circuit City is like so many other stores, they fail to realize that without us, their customers, they will not have any business, therefore will go under. Stores use to take pride in training their employees, it cost them some money up front, but the benefits were awesome for them, because of the special training, the sales staff know a lot about the products and servies and treated people with respect, they companies, like Circuit City, decided to save money by not training their staff, then it comes back to bite them.
