Air Fares Informative - Orbitz, Travelocity, et al are getting real competition

The third-party airfare agencies, such as Orbitz and Travelocity, are now facing some heavy competition. The competition is not another booking site, but the airlines themselves. Due to the poor economy and the lower cost of fuel the airlines are cutting regular fares.

A few airlines may also be cutting their ties with third-party agents because they will save money by not having to pay commissions.

Airlines (as well as any other type of company that sells direct to the consumer as well as through wholesalers) depend more on third party sites during tough times than not. I was recently on a trans-Atlantic flight that had 150 empty seats, so airlines will take whatever sales they can get. Whenever airlines lower fares directly to the consumer, those fares appear on other websites as well...
