BankAtlantic Complaint - Manipulates Information To Charge Overdraft Fees

Review by GBHT on 2009-02-18
FT. LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA -- BankAtlantic manipulates your transactions. I am very careful to check my account on-line to see if checks have been paid and transactions I make using the debit card. I make certain no to go over the amount of money I know I have in the bank. I do usually use up most of the balance in the account. That is what they like. You make a deposit and they will show it as available after 24 or so hours. Then, BAM! They hit you with overdraft fees for transactions that happened a day or two before the deposit.

When you talk to them, they simple cannot give you a decent explanation. In my opinion they manipulate checks paid as well as debit transactions against your deposits. At times getting 10 overdraft fees at $32 a pop – BankAtlantic sure uses unfair practices.

Where can we go? Who can help us?

Only you can stop these OD charges. You do that by going out and getting a check register, post every transaction as it occurs and do not spend more than you have.

It's really very simple.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your comments, but it sounds like you didn't have the available cash to cover the transactions made a day or two before the deposit. If that is the case, then this isn't a case of manipulation by the bank, but of you trying to manipulate the bank. If the money won't be there until Wednesday, you can't buy something on Monday. As msnanny says "it's really very simple."

I think he's saying that they held his deposit when it should have been available, meanwhile he was using his card.

You can't spend it before you have it, that shouldn't be so hard to correct.

Boki, that doesn't sound like a funds availability problem, it sounds like using the debit card then trying to beat the electronic transaction to the bank. And that aint gonna happen.
