Sprint Complaint - Dangers Of "Free Phone" From Sprint
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA -- As of 2008 we were past the 2 year initial contract with Sprint, and used the service on month-to-month basis. Few months ago my daughter was given a free phone in a Sprint store (in Davis, CA) - "no strings attached" - as a "special promotion for existing customers", "that one month only". She was not asked to sign anything. I, the mother and the person paying Sprint bills, was not asked to authorize nor was I notified of any new contract.
Yet, when we tried to cancel Sprint last January, we were told we have a new 2 year contract. I asked them to show me the signed contract. After endless hours with Customer Service they finally pointed me to a web site that stated something like "...accepting a phone is equivalent to a contract" . This was supposed to be the "proof"..(!)
My daughter was not shown that statement when she was given the phone - she would have refused the phone. So - we are not paying that bill and we now have a Collection Agency involved. I am wondering if there are other people out there with similar experience...It seems that some new laws are needed to better regulate this aspect of things. Was it an honest mistake or a scam?
