Applebee's Complaint - Bogus Giftcards
WESTLAND, MICHIGAN -- I took out a group of nine friends to Applebee's in Westland MI in Dec. 08. When server delivered the bill, she made an offer for gift cards to be used at a later date at the rate of $5.00 for each $25 spent. I ordered four. I live about 15 blocks from the restaurant and dine there often. I am 69 and retired on a fixed income. My first experience with trying to use the gift cards was a few weeks later when I was told I could only use one at a time. Yesterday 3/10/09 I decided to have lunch there with my wife when I attempted to use the last one and it was rejected with the explanation that it had expired. I shrugged my shoulders relatively gently and left the server her full tip on my American Express gold card. I then suggested she tell the manager that at their next staff meeting that this matter ought to be revisited because I felt "ripped off" since I had voluntarily added $75 to my December bill since it was a "promotion" seeming to be with the purpose of increasing business and customer good will. I did not ask to see the manager, but said if she preferred I would speak to the person. When she came she was very rude, insolent and arrogant. Why didn't I read the rules and regulations, etc. I responded that since I paid money for this "gift card", there shouldn't be any requirement to read a page of legalease for such a small amount.
My point was they were in danger of losing a customer with such a counterproductive policy. (We were 11 days past the expiration date written on the back) She only got louder and more confrontational. So I said to her that after being in management and working 40 years, I could tell her that her management skills were very deficient. I also said that If I were the one making the decision, she would be the last person I would consider for a promotion when the time came. I told her that if she hadn't been given the latitude to make an adjustment for a matter like this as a manager, she ought to add that to her list of things to bring up at a staff meeting. She then said since I had degraded her, she was now leaving our table and stormed off. This morning I went to the Applebee's web page and found evidence that there is no where a complaint can be registered except the local restaurant in question.
I hope your services include informing Applebee's corporate office of this deficiency in their business model as some of the people who represent them are doing a very poor job.
