FreeCreditReport.com Complaint - Do Not Sign Up Unless You Love To Fight - Credit Monitoring

Credit Monitoring - Complaint
Review by CMcIntyre90 on 2009-03-20
FAIRLESS HILLS, PENNSYLVANIA -- In my other reviews, I mentioned how I am about to take on a car payment. So lately, I've been obsessed how my credit is. I have to use my grandmother's credit to purchase and pay off this car. So this brings me to FreeCreditReport.com

I've seen the commercials, and I saw an ad on Facebook, so I said "Hey, why not?" So I go through the whole sign-up thing, and it says that you will be charged if you do not cancel within a week. Well I'm sure they depend on you to either miss out on that little detail, or completely forget about it until you are charged and can't do anything about it. Well I was planning on taking a look at my credit score, and then canceling right after that, no dilly-dallying. So I found my credit score, which is good because I only have one credit card, I was concerned if it was affected by my parents and rest of family because of a failed business which affected most of their credit, and I did not want to be in the danger zone at 18 years old. So anyway, as with most other services in the world, to cancel I clicked on the "My Account" tab to see a screen that only contained options to change my name, address, etc. Where's the "Cancel" option?

They don't provide information to cancel, or at least where it should be. So I went on Google and found a page that talked about canceling the account with them, and it's just as bad as trying to cancel AOL back in the day, where they would not take No for an answer.

I signed up around 1:15am today, and sent the e-mail regarding cancellation around 1:23am, and another one around 1:44am because I received a "Welcome" e-mail to FreeCreditReport.com.

The e-mails were as follows:

1.

I wish to cancel my account with FreeCreditReport.com. Registered on Friday, 3/20/2009, Canceling on 3/20/2009. I will keep this e-mail in my records for proof that I did cancel 7 days ahead of the charging deadline, and will be sure that no fees are accrued to my account.

and 2.

This is my second e-mail because I just received a "Welcome" e-mail to FreeCreditReport.com. I want to be sure and absolutely clear when I say that I wish to cancel my account with FreeCreditReport.com, meaning that I wish not to be associated with any part of your services, or linked to FreeCreditReport.com in any way. I don't want any sales pitches, or attempts to retain me because I have no intent of paying, continuing, or needing any of these provided services. I was just curious as to what my score was, no specific reasoning for why I even needed it, and I don't need to know what my score is every day. So I will say this again. I wish to be removed from all services provided from FreeCreditReport.com, Free AND Paying services. I do not expect to be charged in any way shape or form. I will notify my credit card company about this issue and be sure that any attempts at being charged from your company will be reversed.

My account ID is - **********.

Please let me know when this action has been done and I am completely removed from your system and will not be charged any fees whatsoever.

Thank you for your cooperation.

I have not received any responses yet being it is 2:37am local time. My real big complaint right now is that you figure most companies, or at least legitimate companies would have a Cancel option online if you can sign up online with them without a problem. It's just very misleading how they have it set up. I also let JPMorganChase know about this, the company that my credit card is with that would be charged with any fees by FreeCreditReport.com. I don't know if they can do anything about it, but the fact that I let them know about the issue and have all of my e-mails and times on file may help me in the long run.

If anyone has any experience with them, please let me know anything that could help me with this. I don't feel like being charged money that I shouldn't be paying due to misleading advertisements and all of that crap.

You would probably get better results if you called them instead of emailing. They could easily deny never having received you request to cancel with the time frame.
Make sure you get a confirmation number.
From the web site:
How do I cancel my membership?

If for any reason you are not satisfied, you can cancel anytime to discontinue your membership to Triple Advantage Credit Monitoring and stop the monthly billing. However, you will not be eligible for a prorated refund of any portion of your current month's paid membership fee. To cancel, please contact Customer Care at
1-888-829-6560.

Actually, it is usually the opposite, as emails create a paper trail.

I also recommend getting a tape recorder for your phone, so you have recorded verification of the cancellation.

Well I got two email responses from two different people saying the same thing that they're sorry to see me go, and I got an email saying that my cancellation is effective 3/28/09. That's 8 days away. I hope that means that I can't use it that day, and they're not going to charge me on day 7, and then cancel me on day 8, thats ridiculous. I sent an e-mail back about that and saying that I will go through dispute if they charge me any fees, because I clearly canceled before 7 days were up.

I signed up on freecreditreport.com as well. However, I never got to look at my credit score. I couldn't get past the security questions. One question listed a bunch of addresses and asked which one I had lived at. I never lived at any of them and that answer was not an option. So I never completed the process. They still charged me for it though. Emails didn't help so I called and they refunded my money and cancelled my account.

I agree, call them to discuss the cancellation in person. I've used freecreditreport.com for years and haven't had any issues but whenever I've needed assistance I've called.

And I suggest that you don't get a tape recorder and record the call. If you really feel you need to do something like that, you must first check your states laws, every state is different. Most companies don't allow their customers to record the calls anyway and once you advise that you're doing so, they will simply disconnect.

Just got an email back from them saying that my account will remain active until the 27th and I will not be charged for the free trial period. So I'm hoping that come the 27th, 28th, i don't get any charge. It seems like they understand what I mean and now I just have to play the waiting game. Thank you all for your tips and advice, it seems like the e-mails have worked thus far.

Keep the confirmation that you will not be charged. Then if they do charge you, you can forward that information to the credit card company and dispute it.

I too have had problems with freecreditreport.com. You have to call to cancel (they dont make it exactly obvious as to what number to call), and when you finally do call and talk to a Rep, they give you such a hard time trying to get you to keep your membership. It is such a ridiculous hassle. I cant stand businesses that are run that way.
