CoreComm Complaint - Awful dial-up internet service

Complaint
Review by mikeman on 2001-06-07
ELK GROVE VILLAGE, ILLINOIS -- I recently switched to corecomm because I thought it would be a better deal than Ameritech since it cost only a few dollars more, but included free internet service. Well I discovered why you offer this 'free internet' service, because it does not work!

For the last two weeks I've been abused by your dial-up service. First it takes about 5-6 attempts just to connect. THEN once I finally get connected, I notice I only connected at 9600 baud. I try again. I connect at 12000 baud. (if you do not understand what this means, to summarize, it was connecting me at half the speed or less of a 28.8kb modem, and I have a 56k modem!) Sometimes it is fun, kind of like a game. I guess how many times it will take me to connect, or at what slow speed I will connect at. You'd be surprised how good I am getting at this game.

My final gripe, when I do finally connect at a decent speed (after 10+ dial-up attempts), the connection gradually gets slower and slower until I need to disconnect and re-dial in again (once again, starting over with dialing at 9600, then 12000, then 21000... you get the point). My modem has worked wonderfully with my previous service, so I am confident that is not the bottleneck. Your service is.

To help keep me as a potential future customer, I would like the following:

I think it would be great if you were more honest about your 'free internet' service. Let people know about the fun games they can play while they are trying to dial into your network for an hour.

I don't expect any compensation what so ever from your company. I am switching back to Ameritech, and back to a internet provider that knows what they are doing.
