Chicken of the Sea Complaint - Poor Quality - Tuna

Tuna - Complaint
Review by lmj on 2009-04-07
There is no longer a number you can contact to let consumer affairs know the quality of tuna being produced by their employees. Now you expect someone to write a letter and send it to whoever, wherever. How convenient for you. By the way, my complaint was that your CHUNK white tuna is pure mush. No pieces of tuna at all. This has been an ongoing problem for several years. I decided to call customer service and let them know, AGAIN, about the problem, so they could look in to it again, So much for the consumer!! I will buy Starkist from now on, goodbye.

I think this is a problem now with all canned tuna. Several months ago, I opened a can of Starkist and it was 'mush' as described. A few weeks later, I bought Chicken of the Sea and it was also mush. Went back to Starkist...that's right, mush. Tried Chicken of the Sea again...big chunks, very nice looking tuna. I wonder what's up.

I've been buying the pouches of Starkist for hubby's lunches and they are a lot better than the can. They cost a little more, but I'm actually paying for tuna, not something that resembles cat food. Try the pouches.

I may try the pouches again. A bit more expensive as I recall. Maybe their putting their better product in pouches and putting the mush in cans. It really pi$$ed me off when I went to drain a can, and half of the tuna squeezed out like toothpaste and went down the drain.

the pouches do not need to be drained.

I just gave up on the cans for that same exact reason! Hubby likes to take tuna salad for lunch at work and all I was getting was mush. It made the bread soggy, I just wasn't happy at all. I have no problem at all with the pouches.

there was a post the other day about Bumble Bee tuna being better than the other brands in this respect. The person who wrote the response seems to be someone who works in a tuna packing plant, and explained why tuna sometimes becomes mush due to the machine that packs it.

Wow, I hadn't realized this has been an ongoing problem... Every can of tuna "Chunk white or regular tuna has been mushy!
I have had better generic brands.

I called them @ (858) 558-9662 and they were VERY helpful. The woman told me it happens on occasion due to the processing and cooking of the product. The gelatinous mas is caused by the vegetable broth. They want to know when it happens, so they can pin point the plant, and the problem.

I found I thought at first, Tuna tooth(looks like one) in my can of tuna.I checked online at pics and found out was part of the vertebrae.Couple days later same thing happened..they are very sharp.I had one in my mouth, but felt it and did not swallow it, thank goodness! This is the last time I'm buying a can of Van Camps Chicken of the Sea Tuna!!
