Motel 6 Complaint - Scam
AUGUSTA, MAINE -- I stayed one evening in the Augusta Motel 6. The room was in shambles including sagging ceiling tiles with water damage, a dilapidated a/c unit and overall foul smell and appearance. I noticed that the plate that sits in between the two door knobs of the bathroom door was sitting on the floor with one screw. Considering the overall condition of the room, and the fact that we paid $43.00 for one night, I did not think anything of it. I checked out the next day and went home. A few hours later I received a call from the police stating that I had caused damage to the hotel room and needed to call the manager. I did so immediately and was told that they were pressing criminal charges against me if I did not pay for damages related to the bathroom door being kicked in. I explained that I did not kick the bathroom door in and caused no damages to the room. The manager explained that I had no proof and that he had cleaning people that would say it was not broken prior to my stay. Because, I was very afraid of possible criminal action, I asked what I needed to do.
The manager said that I could bring him some money, and then he would mail me a receipt when he got it fixed. I declined, but offered to reimburse for the cost of repairs once completed, in an effort to avoid charges. I figured I would then pursue the fact that I had not done anything to warrant this action. Since that day I have contacted the manager daily attempting to get a quote for repair. Each day he has had a reason why he did not have a completed quote, but the door itself was going to cost $30.00. 4 days after my stay, $500.00 was deducted from my checking account without authorization. That withdrawal resulted in $323.00 in overdraft that included $63.00 in NSF’s so far.
I have been in touch with the local policeman that investigated the incident. I explained that the manager is claiming that it is very clear that the door was kicked in. The officer said that the crack was very small and would not have been noticeable if the plate had been in place. He claims that this hotel has filed numerous complaints regarding damage to rooms intending to get compensation. I have since done internet research and found that many people have been scammed in a very similar fashion by Motel 6.
Heed my warning! If you have no other alternative and must stay in one of these dives, make everything known that is wrong with the room. Do not think it wouldn't happen to you! Do a google search including Motel 6 and scams.
