Hertz Complaint - Another Bogus Fuel Charge
ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO -- Add me to the long list of folks who discovered Hertz had tacked on a Fuel/Svs Charge after I returned my rental car with a full tank to Albuquerque Airport. Yes, they did credit my account once I called customer service and faxed over my gas station receipt, explanation and Hertz bill. But judging by the number of complaints I've seen online, I do not believe this was an innocent mistake.
What galls me is that the guy who checked in my car when I returned it to Hertz, used the key to turn on the car to check my mileage. At that point it was obvious I had returned with a full tank. I could kick myself for not noticing this bogus charge at the airport, but I had baggage and a flight to catch. It wasn't until I was itemizing my expenses that I caught the "fuel" charge.
My guess is it's quite a fruitful scam for car rental operators. A lot of folks rent cars while on business trips. Since their employer is paying for it, they don't question all the charges. A colleague who rented from another company (Budget, I think) also discovered the same bogus fuel charge. What a racket!
