Coventry Health Care, Inc. (Mail Handlers Benefit Plan) Complaint - Denial of coverage by Coventry Health Care

Review by Luke Kemia on 2009-05-17
The brochure for my health insurance plan, The Mail Handlers Benefit Plan, which is part of Coventry Health Care, Inc., specifically lists allogeneic blood stem cell transplants for chronic lymphocytic leukemia as covered. I am in need of that treatment, and I have gone to the hospital dictated by Mail Handlers for preliminary work. Then suddendly I got a letter from Coventry/Mail Handlers saying they were denying coverage, even though the treatment was listed as covered in the plan. The reasoning that the company used was a real stretch--convoluted and unbelievable to me. This treatment would likely extend my life and could even CURE my cancer, but Coventry/Mail Handlers pulled the rug out from under me, counter to the recommendation of the hospital that the insurance company itself had recommended. I appealed the decision to the company, they upheld their original decision, and a second level appeal to a government agency is now pending (May 2009).
