United Parcel Service Informative - Pricing themselves out of business
ASTORIA, OREGON -- Up until six months ago, I used UPS religiously to overnight graphic design ads to my customers nationwide. About a year ago, gas prices went thru the roof and UPS rates followed - along with assanine "Fuel Surcharges" and "Pick-Up Fees" - the latter of which were added to packages taken directly to UPS. So now I transmit all my work electronically over a FTP or large file transmission site such as YouSendIt.com. I have eliminated all UPS and FedEx shipping expenses. FUNNY THING - gas prices have gone down, way down since approaching almost $4 per gallon and UPS has not reduced their rates to coincide.
The USPS solution is always to raise the price of stamps. In the face of email which will destroy their existence. The new 44¢ stamp will help maintain Mr. Potter's fat salary and medical benefits when most stamp buyers have none.
When are these corporations and their fat cigar-smoking overpaid CEOs going to get away from the "raise rates" mindset to keep their six-figure salaries and health benefits? Because that solution does not hold water in 2009 and in today's economy. These mindsets are turning their companies into dinasaurs and they'll be extinct before long.
