Daimler-Chrysler Complaint - Too Many Repairs - Boosted Service Charges
LAPEER, MICHIGAN -- To Whom It May Concern:
We own a 1996 Dodge Caravan LE. In the last six months, we have spent nearly C$7,000.00 in repairs and towing fees. This is nearly more than we paid for this van used!
The last serious problem we had was while traveling in Michigan. The van stalled in the middle of a construction zone in Flint,MI (not a great place to be stranded in a van with Ontario license plates, and a woman with a child!). Fortunately, I had a cell-phone with me and was able to call for a wrecker who charged me U.S.$103.00 to tow me to the nearest Chrysler dealer in Lapeer, MI which was Krane Chrysler-Dodge. We had to leave our van overnite as this was last Sunday (April 18, 2004) and make contact with the dealer the next day. This was not cheap either as we had to find lodging for the night. The next day I contacted the dealer and gave permission to do the work and he returned my call sometime later to tell me that the cost would be over U.S.$867.00! I was appalled! The work done was installation of a new fuel pump and sensor as well as a filter. The labour alone was almost U.S.$400.00. We paid the bill by MasterCard and returned to Canada.
The next day we contacted our regular Chrysler dealer, Kernohan's in Forest, Ontario. Our service specialist, John Lean, informed us that we were over-charged by nearly $400.00 (not including the U.S. exchange) for the work that was done in the states. He informed me of the Chrysler consumer hot-line 800# which I called yesterday and received NO satisfaction. The person I talked with said that dealerships in the states can charge whatever they wish for labour especially when the vehicle is not under warranty any longer.
This is just one incident that we have been through over the past six months; we have also had the transmission rebuilt, a new drive shaft installed, a compressor and various other misc. repairs. It has been a living nightmare that is putting us in financial jeopardy with no recourse.
Needless to say, I will NEVER buy another new or used Chrysler product.
