Budget Rent-A-Car Complaint - Intimidation Regarding Purchasing Additional Insurance
TUCSON, ARIZONA -- On 4/25/99 I rented a car at Tucson Municipal Airport after having reserved it through AARP on-line. I was being signed in when the clerk asked if I needed more insurance. I said no, that my insurance would cover any loss. He said that unless I was 100% sure my policy covered accidents in rental cars, I would be held responsible for any damage and have to "pony up" the total amount for repair/replacement/bodily injury, on the spot even if I was not at fault. Never having encountered this before, I assumed it was a new Budget requirement. The guy scared me so badly that I "elected" $25.99/day extra insurance. He even said that wasn't enough that it only paid for replacement of the vehicle. He said I should get $50 a day premium to make sure I was safe. I said that $25.99/day was enough and anyway there was no $50.00/day offered on the contract. He said he could write it in. I again refused. Once I got to my destination I read the contract closer and realized that the man coerced me into accepting something I did not need. So, the car that was to cost me $113.40 (plus all the neat little fees you charge) for the week ended up costing me $408.88, an amount well beyond my budget. I also feel really, really stupid.
Do your clerks get bonuses for pinning on the extras for senior citizens? No, never will I rent from Budget again -- My Face book friends and work colleagues will know about this too. Hope it costs you a pretty penny, like it did me.
