Chase Manhattan Bank Complaint - Similar Experiences - Credit Card
NORTH CAROLINA -- I opened a credit card with Chase around May 2008. I was supposed to get 0% financing for a year, but they told me that my offer was no longer being honored because that was a January 2008 offer.
I had about $500 dollar balance on the account that I was paying slowly--and in October 2008 I decided I would pay it off. I paid the balance, but there was some kind of finance charge that remained. I explained to Chase over the phone that I wanted the account closed, and as soon as I received a final statement, I would pay it off. I had been receiving notifications by mail.
I did not receive another statement until January 2009, saying that I owed over $150 dollars. I called and they said that my account was closed by them for non-payment in November 2008. I explained to them that I had never received a final statement for the account that I closed in October 2008.
I asked them to clean up this account, take off all fees and charges that accrued from November to January, and if I owed anything I would pay it. I paid the balance online, called them to see that it was received, and asked specifically to have any negative comments on my credit report expunged. They said it would happen. A month or so later I received a check for the amount I had paid in January. Thought everything was fine.
I checked my Experian Credit report as is my habit annually and discovered that Chase reported late payment in November-December 2008 (the months I did not receive statements). I immediately disputed online and called Chase.
They sent me to three different departments before I reached someone who apologized for the inconvenience, but it was obviously my fault for not receiving statements--"you requested email statements"--I asked "When?"--"In January 2009"
I explained that January 2009 was the month I closed the account for a second time, and I had not received paper statements for the three months previous.
I remarked that the folks I spoke with in January 2009 saw all the issues that were the fault of Chase, and they cleaned up the account and I even received a refund. The only thing they didn't do was make sure that my credit report was to show that I closed the account.
After reading a few reviews online, I realize there are many of us in the same boat. So far, I have not been denied credit or services from their issues--but time will tell.
I would be willing to join a class action law suit of those who have had similar experiences with Chase
