Commonwealth Edison Company Informative - Coal sourced from companies using mountaintop removal

Review by suburban customer on 2009-06-07
I just followed a link, called My Connection, at the URL ilovemountains.org. I have no reason to disbelieve their information that Com Ed sources coal from companies practicing mountaintop removal to get the coal they sell to Com Ed. Mountaintop removal ruins human communities, rivers and clean water supplies; destroys landscapes and ecosystems; and is a part of the recent sludge flood caused by a dam failure at a holding lake. We should be moving away from such destructive practices and investing in clean energy sources (nuclear isn't "the answer," either, unless fusion is perfected). I would like to know what Com Ed is doing to move in the right direction.

if this is so important to you, start a legislation to stop it. this has been going on many many decades.

What is the answer then? We are being held hostage by oil and clean coal is on the table for a real look.

I have been contacting every political decision maker I can contact about moving to clean energy. I know there will be a time of transition, but blowing up mountains doesn't have to be a part of it. I had no idea that Com Ed bought coal from mountain top mining companies (sorry, I'm not up on absolutely _everything_) and was hoping someone from Com Ed would respond.

Since you're hoping for a response from ComEd, have you contacted them directly? I would imagine the website you cited would have a link to them since that's from where you got your information. I'm in agreement with madconsumer, contact your elected officials.

I couldn't find a link to Com Ed email. Their PR departments often monitor their "image" and I thought I'd comment while continuing my search for an email. I'll call, too, but don't hold out much hope of getting anything more than an automated voice. As already noted, I've contacted a myriad of elected officials on many occasions about alternative energy as well as mountaintop mining. I'm not sure how much anyone listens to any of us, but it's worth it to keep trying.

Why just look for an email link? Write ComEd a letter.

I originally found this site while searching for a way to contact Com Ed (you know the rest from earlier comments). I've been continuing that search and found something. If unsuspecting commenters like me ever show up again, you might try suggesting that they look up the parent company to find contact information for subsidiaries. It might make for a warmer welcome. Sincere wishes for good luck in resolving whatever other issues posters have had with Com Ed.

Whoa, suburban! 'It might make for a warmer welcome.' Just because the three people who responded didn't bow down, kiss your toes, and send up helium balloons, it shouldn't elicit a snarky response. You were given suggestions and a comment. If you don't want them, don't post on a public forum. And---sincere wishes for good luck to you, too.
