AirTran Airways Complaint - Question your AirTran oversize baggage fees!
Summary for this post: Measure your suitcase before using AirTran and carry the manufacturers dimensions with you if you don't want to pay an extra $39 (over the $15) for larger checked bags. All the other complaints you read about AirTran are, unfortunately, accurate. Avoid this AirLine - the add on fees do not make it a bargin!
I recently flew AirTran for the first time on a business trip from BWI to Atlanta. On the outgoing flight I had no trouble with my checked suitcase but like most other people writing reviews for Airtran the flight was delayed (two hours on a clear sunny day up and down the east coast -the flight was in early May) and the interior of the plane was in pretty bad shape (dirty, some broken seats, ...) and the staff was indifferent at best to those of us who kept quiet and stayed in our seats, hostile and impatient to some passengers, including one elderly women at worst. Sorta like reverse customer service.
However on the return flight from Atlanta to BWI the ticketing agent was checking some passangers (including mine) suticase sizes with a tape measure and she informed me my suitcase measured over 62" total (l+w+h) and promptly charged me $39. I asked to do the measurement myself and she asked me if she "needed to call security". I noticed other agents were measuring other customers bags and most of them were also being charged. After a few conversations in the security line I discovered that only folks who were returning were being checked and charged.
When I got home I did check my suitcase dimensions with a tape measure and also looked up the manufacturers specs - it was 59" in both cases.
I can only conclude that AirTran is using or encouraging incorrect luggage measurements by its ticketing agents to scam its customers.
This was my first and last flight on AirTran. They took an extra $39 from me but lost a customer forever. I would rather pay the $100 extra up front to be on time, have courteous and honest staff and have a decent flight by using a real airline. AirTran has to be one of the worst airlines out there. It should be your last resort for air travel and even then think twice!
