Do Not Use. Extremely Expensive, Degrading Manager Response

ALLENTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA -- I signed up for the service contract - 2 visits (1 for AC, 1 for heating system). We have 2 units so had to get 2 contracts. The 2 guys were knowledgeable and touched up a few things. Then came the shocker. They had to replace the capacitor on the outside unit. Their quote after the service contract 10% discount - $447. I should have stopped them right there, but would not know if there were other problems or if the system would work.

They suggested changing the 40 amp wiring contactor also. I said "go ahead" to avoid any future problems - $310 for that. I then went online and looked at prices for the capacitor and the contactor. Both were online for a total of $120. That was a shocker. I could see charging double and doing the repair for a total of $300. Even that would be too high. But charging $726 - that is totally unreasonable. Any honest company would do it for $300 total.

I should have told them to hold off so I could get quotes from other companies, but then they would not be able to see if that would fix the problem or if the rest of the system would work. They did do some other touch ups, answered my questions, and gave a slight discount. But $726 for 2 basic replacements, on top of the $550 service contract. That totals almost $1,300. And they will return to look at the heating system in a few months.

It was quality work, but almost triple what other companies would charge. Another company charged $180 to replace the motor on the outside unit, and Curtis charged me $726 for replacing a capacitor and contactor? I am very unhappy and left a message on their Account voicemail. I now see the other reviews of their extremely high charges, which seem to be the norm for them. My neighbor recommended them, but I should have done my homework. Get quotes from different companies and don't be talked into spending a ridiculous amount of money for a basic repair. I cannot recommend Curtis.

Update: Just received a call back from Curtis. He was rude, demeaning, and kept giving a long-winded speech. I had to keep interrupting in order to say anything. And then he said I was being rude. Summing up his long winded speech - "You were given an estimate before the work was done" as law states.

I should have declined the repair, which I could have easily done myself. But if they are there to check out the AC system and one of the parts of the system is not working and they are overcharging me for hundreds of dollars, do I just tell them no and ask them to leave? How can the rest of the system be tested to find the problems. He bad-mouthed other companies saying they hire ex-cons, morons, and don't know what they are doing. Not a respectful representative of a company.

I would not have this guy working the register at McDonald's or do anything that would have him interact with people. He did not want to listen. He kept trying to justify the cost of replacing 2 minor items that took about 15 minutes to replace. He was trying to explain of how costs are estimated, including licenses, trucks, equipment, and on and on. I responded that I and my family had a business. I respect business. But that does not justify ripping people off and unreasonably overcharging.

I responded that you would not expect to be charged $600 for a $100 hard drive or pay $2,000 for new tires. No response to that. I was losing my cool because I signed the paper, I paid, it was done. Nothing was going to change that and being spoken down to by a non-stop speech and no concern for the customer was not going to change anything.

I said good-bye since it was apparent nothing would happen by both of us going back and forth. This guy went against every rule you hear about how to deal with people and customers. I will not be doing any business with Curtis in the future and will tell Everyone I know and in the immediate area about them. I want to warn others especially elderly people so they do not get ripped off.

Company Response 01/11/2016:

Mr. Ravi,

You've posted this review all over the web. I think it is important to point out that you signed two service agreements, told us your were thrilled with our work. Then, when it was time to pay, you informed us that you had no intention of paying and would "ruin your (our) business online."
We welcome you, again, to give us a call at 855-736-3287 if you have an issue with our service.
Thanks!

ALLENTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA -- I had a fantastic experience with Curtis. Several, actually. They've been doing our plumbing for years. Never once had a problem. Never been overcharged. In fact, before we started using them, we chose a different plumber in Allentown. They were cheaper... much cheaper. Great, right? Yeah, till the leak that they "fixed" literally exploded a day later, flooding our whole basement. We called in Curtis to help. Yeah, it cost more. But, that was 5 years ago and have not had one problem with those pipes since.

I see this "Ravi" guy posting the same review all over the web. It's sad. Looks to me like a guy that signed up for, and paid for, two services he was happy with then used the internet to get free work done. That hurts us, as customers. Want the truth? I can say that Curtis plumbing has helped us for years and I recommend them highly.

ALLENTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA -- HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. Called for an outside emergency plumbing issue. Our guy was unprofessional by arriving 2 hours late and was very rude and rushed. He quoted what he was going to do and said he was going to add a shut off valve and patch up the ceiling. I hate to say this but very dishonest work. Shut off valve work quoted as additional price towards end of job when lead to believe it was already included the price. Open patch in ceiling saying our newly remodeled home wasn't up to code.

Make sure everything is written down on contact. If he says he's going to screw a nail in make sure he writes it down on the contract. Called the very next day and no one ever came out like they promised. Please don't make the same mistake as me, go with someone else who doesn't have billboards on the highway from robbing people.

ALLENTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA -- They don't even worth of one star. SERIOUSLY. But lack of negative or zero star, I had to pick 1. Literally they are robbers in the dress of service guys. They have made everything possible to rob people. I had a need to replace the shower cartridge valve and trim kit. One guy showed up yesterday. Gave me price of USD 416 to replace cartridge and USD 285, so in total 700 bucks to install a cartridge and a trim kit! I was speechless and furious. I said, "So is this your rate?" He said, "This is the industry standard!"

I do not know if these guys are living in this world or not, or if they do at all realize that USD 700 to replace a cartridge and trim kit is just so ridiculously crazy and kind of stab to the customers. I got the job done by the way with USD 280 later by another certified company based in Lehigh Valley. Guys, watch out, NEVER EVER even try to call these robbers Curtis Total Service.

Plumbling Services

ALLENTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA -- There are truly remarkable and wonderful people in the world yet, never lose hope. We recently had a basement overflow from the water system and we could not afford a plumber. I called around to various places and was told I had to pay when services were rendered. I ran into a lot of rude customer service people for this problem and was very discouraged. Calling around and explaining my situation and asking for billing is degrading enough in itself. I reached Curtis Total Service and spoke to Rich **, explaining my situation and out of the kindness of his heart and my situation, he showed compassion for me. Sent his workers out in 30 minutes and everything is wonderful again.

Jacob and Scott were very friendly and very informative and did the job in no time. I cannot say enough how compassionate Rich was to me, and how much I appreciate what he did. I was in tears talking to him over the phone, that is how grateful I was that he would work with me on getting my 4 day old problem solved. It's bad enough to sit and listen to rudeness to you over the phone from many many companies in the area and to get such compassion from Rich, I was overwhelmed and so very grateful. They did an excellent job and I am very pleased with the knowledge of this company's employees. I highly recommend Curtis Total Service!

Stay Away From Curtis Total Service Allentown PA

ALLENTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA -- I contacted Curtis Total Service in November 2008 because I wanted to add new plumbing into a new bathroom I had framed out on the second floor of my home. The house was in remodel stage and it was mainly gutted. We agreed on $3200 to pull permits and inspections, add new lines to the second floor and set all the fixtures. The price was reasonable I felt. While the worker Jacob was on site giving me a quote, we looked in the basement at a fairly brand new water heater. He proceeded to tell me that since it had been shut off for a year, I should have them install a new one for $500. I declined and stated I would wait until the water was turned on before I would make a decision (it turned out to be perfectly fine).

At the time I thought nothing of it, but it was definitely a hard sell tactic for no reason. The workers added new lines within approximately 2 days. Our agreement was 50% down, 50% upon completion. Going into the agreement, they knew it was going to take awhile before construction was complete. So in January they called me to complain that they hadn't received my final payment, and I stated that they had not even completed the work.

When I was ready for them to come back to finish the job in February, that's when it got ugly. They came out within a day or so of me calling to inform them I was ready for them to finish. They proceeded to install a stall shower, a toilet, and a 48" vanity. Well the stall shower wasn't installed level (eventually leading to water ponding on one side). The 48" vanity was going into a space that was about 54" wide, and it wasn't centered it was pushed all the way to one side. I again, didn't make a huge deal as I was trying to move into my home as soon as possible.

Then I had the water company come and turn on the water. There was a leak where they had soldered new lines in the basement. I called to the office to inform them that they needed to come out immediately as there was a leak and I could not use the water. The person in the office proceeded to tell me "We can get to it in a few days." I told him that it was unacceptable and that you better have someone out by the end of the day which I felt was reasonable, especially for a small repair that wouldn't take a plumber more than 5 minutes.

The whole problem should have been avoided from the get-go as they should have pressure tested the lines. They eventually came out and repaired it the same day after 4 phone calls and a lot of grumbling. After the leak was repaired, they said there was one final inspection. I received a phone call from Jacob who informed me that the inspector told him the pressure coming into the house was too high and I needed a pressure regulator. I asked how much. He said normally we charge $1100, but I can do it for $900. This sounded crazy to me.

I declined and told him I would take care of it from there. He asked me if final payment could be billed on my card, I agreed. Payment was never processed. When I investigated the pressure regulator, I was able to buy one from a plumbing supply house for $75. I had it installed by a friend who had it finished in 15 minutes and he charged me a case of beer. I saved $800.

About a month later, someone from their office called me and asked if they could run my card for the remainder due. I said I authorized you to do that over a month ago. The gentleman says "Oh, OK. How did everything turn out?" I proceeded to tell him it was the worst job I've ever seen, it was nothing but a hassle, and I wouldn't recommend them to my enemy. He says, "OK. Is the card number (yadda yadda yadda)" I laughed, said yep and hung up the phone.

I had a friend get 3 estimates from 3 contractors on foundation work. $5000, $5500, and $12000 from Curtis after they told him he needed all sorts of useless garbage. He went with the $5500 and the problem he was having was solved. Bottom line - over-priced, take advantage if you don't know any better, terrible customer service, subpar quality.

ALLENTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA -- We had a huge leak in one of our pipes. We could not find out the source, but our floors were starting to flood. This was on a Saturday night and we didn't think the problem could wait. We turned off the water, then called a few plumbers. Curtis Total was the only one that was willing to come out after hours. They found the leak, fixed it, and we had our water back within a few hours. Fantastic!

Curtis Total Service Ala Cart Pricing - Uses Gross McGinley as Their Collection Agency for Repair Not Made.

ALLENTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA -- 12/22/08 I called Curtis Total Service because my furnace was not running. The contractor added water to system and began to up sell me on service agreements. They billed me for Service Call $77, for Diagnostic $158, and $277 for balancing the system. Adding water and bleeding pipeline.

An hour after he left furnace stop running. Having spent the night with no heat I called another company who repair the problem, which was a faulty primary control. System ran like a gem the rest of winter. Having tried to reach Curtis Total Service to complain, with no result, I stop payment on check.

After 18 days Curtis Total Service Operational Manager finally contacted me. I told him of problem and told him I would pay him $77 for service charge. He stated that wasn't satisfactory. I sent him check for $77. This resulted in Curtis Total Service turning the collect over to Gross McGinley law firm. The lawyer for this firm had no desired to settle this issue even though she was contacted by the Pa, Attorney General Office. She was more concern with escalating the case to a Jury Trial while requesting $1000 judgment for her legal fee.
